Yasmeen will shed light on her creative process, and her approaches to writing and illustration, whether she is working across both or with another creative. She will discuss how the visuals and text come together during the process, and offer advice on working collaboratively.

She will guide you through turning story ideas into written narratives, and share her top tips for creating the visual language of your story from finding your illustrative style to using the right artistic materials, from place and setting to characters.

Plus, she will offer tips for writers and/ or illustrators around the publication process, and answer any questions you might have in a 15 minuet Q&A that will finish the session

This masterclass will be online via Teams. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks after the event has taken place.

In this day-long course, Yasmeen Ismail and Louise Jackson will introduce themselves, providing an overview of their work, their professional backgrounds, their working relationship together, and their experience of working collaboratively in producing a picture book.

You will complete tasks focussed on character design for Picture Books, and will learn how to plan for spreads.

There will be opportunities to partake in friendly and helpful group discussion, allowing you to receive positive instruction and the opportunity to inform your future illustrative practice. The Bookshow with Yasmeen was absolutely brilliant! The children loved every second and were so engaged by the performance. They all wanted to be in the afternoon session and felt very inspired to draw and write. They loved getting their own book - I think this was a real highlight for them! Most of the class then went home and used it as their bedtime reading, sharing it with their family.

Pathways Cambridge Winter Residential

I am teaching a 5 day residential at the Anglia Ruskin University for the Pathways programme.

Pathways is a new two-year illustration programme for a diverse group of talented and ambitious artists who want to be the next generation of children’s illustrators.

Below is a blog I wrote about it all:

Before the Winter Residential for Pathways I was full of nervous excitement.

“What if they all hate me?” I thought.

I was going to be teaching with Rachael Ball (Graphic novelist).

“What if she hates me too?”

But I took charge of my emotions and set off for Cambridge.

“Freedom,” I thought as I boarded the train away from my family.

In what seemed like weeks later I stepped out into the chilly night air and breathed in the city. I coughed and took a cab to the hotel. I was greeted by a lemon pip on the chair in my room. So, this was to be home for the next five days.

The next morning was auspicious enough. Rachael and I had coffee and laughed. We decided that the week would be a great success, and with that thought pushing us forward we walked into the university to meet our mentees. And what a lovely and excited bunch they were. There were tall ones and short ones, smiley ones and chatty ones, and I knew in that instant that I would love each and every one as I would my own child. They were so hungry to learn, and rather than ignore me or throw paper planes whilst my back was turned, they listened, they paid attention and they worked hard.

Each day we were wowed by editors and art directors from big publishing houses. They were met with a chorus of ooh’s and aah’s from the mentees.

“Why didn’t I have this course when I was starting out?” I thought, “I would have KILLED to have done this.”

As far as I knew, no one had to kill anyone. And indeed, neither had I, and yet, there we all were.

Noticeably no one seemed to be perturbed by my constant criticisms of their work. They seemed resigned to do as they were told. They swallowed my feedback with their tears and soldiered on. “That’s not good enough,” I would bellow, “Why did you use that colour?”, and yet, they continued without complaint. “I shall have to be more brutal.”

But sure enough, toiling under my baton the mentees rose to their potential, and stretched and pulled their talents until they had reached their edges.

By the end of the week my little padawans had mastered so much. All of us were exhausted, spread thin by our efforts. As I firmly gripped each shoulder and sent them into their final assessment tears would well in my eyes. These rookies, these fledglings, swept in with the winter wind, were padawans no more. They were warriors. Watch out Children’s Publishing industry. Watch out.

Drawing Words Exhibition

Curated by Children’s Laureate, Lauren Child, the Drawing Words exhibition brings together some of the most exciting children's book illustration to come out of the UK in recent years.

While Peter Rabbit, Paddington Bear and Winnie the Pooh are universally recognised and demonstrate the rich history of children’s book illustration in the UK, Drawing Words looks to the future.

The ten illustrators showcased here have been selected for their distinctly personal and unique work, to offer a snapshot of the vibrant work being produced today.
